Web 2.0 desktop-style apps: Why no local drafts?

Bike CrashI’ve been using the WordPress administration panel to write blog posts, while searching for a desktop blogging app I could get behind. Ecto was too unstable, and I didn’t like Qumana, but I finally settled on BlogDesk which is Windows-ugly but seems rock-solid and ‘just works.’

We’ve had some problems with our router and Internet connection lately, which have resulted in the occasional blip. But it’s infuriating when you’ve written a long post, then click Save or Publish, only to have the connection crap out on you - and lose all of your work. At one point I got in the habit of selecting all of the text in the text area, then copying it before I saved or published. I was also clicking Save and Continue Editing every few minutes.

Clearly this is not helpful.

GMail saves your email drafts in the background as you type. That’s the best way to do it, and I wonder why more Web 2.0 services don’t make that accommodation. Is it hard to do in AJAX?

The next best type of disaster prevention would be a draft that’s saved locally.

Why not have a “Save Local Draft” button (manual, if necessary) that opens a browser window in the background with the latest draft of your material? If the connection goes, you’ve still got it locally - even if your connection stays down.

Innovations like this will go a long way towards reducing concerns about remote storage and connection issues.
